Troubleshooting Macro Security Issues with Payback Machine (Excel 2003)

When attempting to operate The Payback Machine, you may receive the message shown below, or something similar:

The Payback Machine will load improperly if Excel Macro Security levels are set too high. To resolve this:

1. Completely close out of Excel and reopen with a blank workbook. Do not open Payback Machine yet.
2. From the menu bar, select Tools -> Macros -> Security
3. Click on Medium. Click on OK.

This will not put you at risk for unsafe macros. It merely tells Excel to prompt you whether the file is safe before opening it. The Payback Machine macros are safe.

4. Reopen Payback Machine. You will see the prompts below, or something similar:

5. Select “Enable Macros”.
Payback Machine will run properly. In the future, you may see the “Security Warning” prompt on other Excel files. As with any file, exercise reasonable caution to assure you know the origin of the file before opening.
